Book A Botanical Selection Session

A note from Rachel Knott - My Animal Matters

”Jo brings a rare mix of calm intuition, solid knowledge, and genuine care to every session. She listens closely to both dog and guardian, creating a space where everyone feels understood rather than rushed or overwhelmed.

She reads a dog’s signals with patience and clarity, and she has a gift for explaining things in a way that feels accessible and grounded. Her sessions feel collaborative, she supports without taking over, guides without pressure, and holds space for whatever the dog needs in the moment.

What stands out most is how deeply she cares. Jo shows up prepared, curious, and fully present, and her clients feel that. You’ll be met with compassion, clarity, and someone who’s truly invested in helping you and your dog move forward together.

You’re in very safe, very capable hands with Jo"

My Animal Matters School of Learning For Animal Communication and Applied Zoopharmacognosy

Botanical Selection

What is Zoopharmacognosy?

The term Zoo-pharma-cognosy is derived from Greek language:

Zoo = animal,

Pharma = medicine

Cognosy = knowledge.

This term describes the phenomenon of animals self- selecting and using plants, soils, or other natural substances to help restore balance in their bodies and prevent or alleviate health issues through ingestion, inhalation and where indicated, topical application.

Innate

Dogs, like many species, possess an innate ability to sense which substances may support their bodies through smell, taste, or instinctive interest.

By offering safe, species-appropriate natural aromatics such as herbs, clays,  hydrosols and oils in a safe and controlled environment, we give our dogs choice to self-select what they need, rather than imposing a remedy.

Through their choices and responses, we can gain insight into underlying imbalances be they physical (gut, pain, immune) or emotional (stress, fear and trauma).

These indications can help us to understand your dog’s experience in the moment as a form of communication to foster better connection and understanding which can be supportive to veterinary care,

Voluntary & Supportive

Because the selection is voluntary, the process respects the dog’s agency. Dogs often disengage once their need is met, minimizing the risk of overdose as they choose their dosage.

Self selection in this way helps bridge the gap between natural remedies and evidence-informed facilitation. We are not prescribing or diagnosing we are honouring the dog’s own intelligence and agency, to foster deeper trust and cooperation. Over time, patterns of preference or avoidance can help inform any needed interventions.
